On June 19th, 1865, (after the surrendering of General Lee in April of that same year), Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas. He informed the Texans that slavery had ended. To be exact, he said, "The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer."

This announcement was made two and half years AFTER the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by Abraham Lincoln, on January 1st, 1863.

Henceforth, this day has been commonly referred to as Juneteenth.

Juneteenth is the oldest commemoration of the “ending of slavery” in the United States. Across centuries, Melanated people in the U.S. have fought for and built up Melanated joy and celebration for our reservoir of resilience.

Juneteenth is an opportunity to honor our ancestors and all of the gifts they have given us, and to dream of what is necessary for future generations. We dedicate this day to Melanated joy.

We find joy in our music, dance, art, and laughter — but also in remembrance. So I invite you to give yourself an opportunity to be joyful.

Happy Juneteenth☥
